Erzsébet Grove

After the death of Queen Elisabeth in 1898, the Minister of Agriculture Ignác Darányi called for trees to be planted throughout the country to commemorate her. Count Tasziló Festetics II responded to the call and had a grove of trees planted in 1899 on the lake shore of the Balaton, next to the railway embankment at that time. The area of the grove was considerably reduced by the relocation of the railway station. Until a decade ago a campsite was operating in the shade of the century-old trees. The last hardwood grove in Keszthely is a pleasant rest area with an interactive nature trail.
