The small memorial tree stands on a charming clearing in the Szebike forest. According to a legend from those days, at the beginning of the 19th century a craftsman placed an image of the Virgin Mary in the hollow of an oak tree on the side of the forest road between Várvölgy and Sümeg, as a gesture of thanksgiving. On their way to and from work, he and his fellow workers would take a short break to pray in front of the tree bearing the portrait of the saint. At that time, wandering pilgrims also passed by the tree on their way to Sümeg for indulgence, as long as until March 2013, when a storm toppled the tree. A replica of the portrait that used to be inside the tree has been placed at a memorial site near the original location. It is a stopping place for pilgrims walking along the St Mary's way.
