Kossuth Lajos utca is the oldest street in the city. The section of the street closest to the castle, between the intersection of Georgikon, Szalasztó and Kastély streets and the main square, is about 300 metres long and has been turned into a pedestrian zone. There are several listed buildings with baroque, classicist, romantic, eclectic and historicist features, built between the second half of the 18th century and the beginning of the 20th century. In the middle section of the street you will find one of the oldest buildings in the city, the former home of the Gersei Pethő family now called Pethő House, also known as the Goldmark House because in 1830 the composer Károly Goldmark, author of the opera Queen of Sheba, was born in this building. At the back of the courtyard of the house a synagogue was built at the end of the 19th century, also featuring a Biblical Garden. On the ground floor of these buildings there are exhibitions of private collections, boutiques, restaurants, cafés and ice cream parlours. Another highlight of the street, now paved with granite tiles and basalt cobblestones, are the ash trees on both sides. Under the shade of the trees you can relax on the benches and enjoy the street scenery.
