1. Route description, explanation of signs
A medium-length tour with moderate elevation gain in the southern Lake Balaton area that does not contain any unpaved roads and is therefore rideable regardless of the weather.
The route takes very few public roads so is also recommended for families with bigger children.
The tour can also be combined with a train ride from Balatonfenyves on the narrow-gauge railway, however it is advisable to arrange for the transport of the bicycle in advance with them.
2. Difficulty factors in the tour
The stretch between Fonyód and Csisztafürdő runs on gravel and pebble paths, ride with extra caution.
The route crosses the main road 7 at Fonyód, please ride with extra caution there.
3. Ambience
You ride back and forth on the same track, yet a variety of experiences await! The first stop is the Csiszta-fürdő spa, where once oil was sought, but to the delight of many, healing thermal water was found instead. Further towards Buzsák, a longer break is recommended, as it is worthwhile to visit both the charming village museum in a country house, famous for its embroidery and folk art, and the little known, fairy tale-like Fehér chapel from the 13th century. The farthest point of the tour from Lake Balaton is Somogyvár, where one of the most prestigious monasteries of Hungary was standing. At the national Szent László memorial site the interactive visitor centre and a tour among the ruins will certainly enrich your knowledge. After the break, you can get back into the saddle and return to the starting point in Fonyód, and thus to the Balaton cycling circuit!
